Rhône Glacier - Furka Pass Cycling photography prints by davidt
Due to climate change, the Rhône glacier in the picture below taken around 1900, can no longer be seen in the main picture opposite.
The glacier is losing from 5 to 7 metres in thickness yearly. Experts predict a further 50% reduction by 2030 and its complete disappearance by 2050. As the source of the River Rhône, one of Europe's largest rivers, this is expected to have unavoidable catastrophic consequences for the supply of fresh water to large parts of Eastern France.
During the last ice age, the Rhône Glacier was the largest glacier in the Alps, covering much of Switzerland.
