Duotone fine art photography prints

Duotone printing has long been associated with traditional black-and-white film photography and fine art printmaking. With this collection, I am drawing on an almost-forgotten printing craft that brings a distinctive character and depth to monochrome images.

Unlike standard black-and-white printing, duotone prints are created using two carefully selected inks. This process enhances tonal range, revealing greater detail in both the highlights and shadows while introducing subtle warmth or coolness to the image. The result is a richer, more nuanced photograph with increased depth, atmosphere, and visual impact.

By carefully choosing the second tone, each print can evoke a different mood—from the warmth of a vintage darkroom print to the cooler, more contemporary feel of modern fine art photography. The duotone process allows for a level of creative expression that goes beyond traditional monochrome printing, producing images with exceptional subtlety, character, and timeless appeal.

It can be challenging to accurately display black-and-white duotone photography prints online because of the subtle colour tones used in the highlights and midtones. The appearance of these delicate tonal variations can differ significantly depending on your monitor calibration, screen settings, and device.

While every effort is made to represent each print as faithfully as possible, the true character of a duotone photograph is best appreciated in print, where the depth, tonal richness, and subtle colour nuances become fully visible. As a result, the finished print may appear slightly different from what you see on screen, often revealing a greater sense of warmth, depth, and detail than digital displays can reproduce.
