Gifts for cyclists.
Once upon a time, I received a puncture repair kit for Christmas. Another year it was a cycle pump, a very nice cycle pump, but a cycle pump never-the-less. I am here to tell you, people, this is just not good enough. Times may be tough, but a cycle repair kit doesn't cut it in the gifts for cyclists category. Or the presents for cyclists, or any other category for that matter. If you find yourself even considering such a purchase it's time to pause, reflect, reboot if necessary.
But I'm fairly sure you've already done that, otherwise you wouldn't be here.
So, what to buy for him or for her? It could be a father’s day or a mother’s day gift, a birthday gift or any other day. Could it be for a brother, a sister, a husband or a friend? To say thank you or congratulations, or I love you. Not many people buy divorce gifts, except perhaps for themselves, but a wedding gift? How cool would that be, a great big A1 sized fine art print of The Tourmalet, The Aubisque or the Sa Calobra hanging on the wall demanding attention. The call of the wild, release the inner child. That’s more than a wedding present to remember, that's a statement of intent.
It's very important to remember when buying gifts or presents for cyclists, they are fanatics. It comes with the territorial, don’t expect them to be normal. To them cycling 27km. up a mountain for no apparent reason is normal, they do it to stay normal, at least on the outside. They do it because they have to, they do it to stay sane. They do it for the thrill of it, the incredible sense of wellbeing that comes with being in the middle of a landscape so impressive it takes your breath away. They do it for the awe-inspiring wonder of nature in all its glory surrounding you, to know without a shadow of a doubt that this is a good day. Who doesn't want that in their life?
Whoever it is you are buying for doesn’t really matter. What matters is the effect your gift has on the cyclist in your life. They could be a keen amateur or a peloton pro. A social-cafe and cake specialist, or someone needing the challenge to get them off the sofa having spent too long staring down the barrel of triple-heart bypass. What matters is your gift is unique, genuine, and enriches the life of the person receiving it.
A gift doesn’t have to be expensive to be valuable, it could be inexpensive, yet priceless. When we give we are usually looking to please or to enrich. To enhance or maybe to influence. We buy for love and pleasure and sometimes purpose. So don't fight it, go with it. Put one of The Great Cycling Climbs pictures on your wall today and release the inner child, it will take you places you never dreamed existed. From the Alps to the Pyrenees, start dreaming today, because if you don’t have a dream how are your dreams going to come true.
