Alpe d’Huez - Black & White

One of the top climbs of the Tour de France. The average percentage of Alpe d'Huez is quite high at 8.1% with a length of 13.2 km and 1,071m. of climbing. But, isn't on paper at least, one of the toughest climbs. However, what Alpe d'Huez lacks in altitude and length is made up for in intensity. The climb is full-on from the bottom to the top with very little respite from the gradient or the heat bouncing off the south facing rock-lined road. See you there for the 2018 Tour de France.

The Col de I’Iseran, at 2,764m. is the highest paved pass in the Alps, and not for the faint-hearted. Climbing all the way up here, and just as importantly, getting all the way back down again is a serious business. But what you get in return is breathtakingly beautiful, awe-inspiring, and scary all at the same time. This is the big daddy of the great cycling road climbs. Many climb the north side, up through Val-d'Isere, but the southern climb is where the real wild grandeur lies. As close to raw nature as you will find anywhere in these mountains. Nothing surpasses the Col de I'lseran, nothing comes even close.

My first exposure to the Col de I'Iseran was late one summers evening, coming up from Val-d'Isere. The sun was out the sky was blue, there wasn't a cloud to spoil the view. That changed as quickly as the flick of a light switch. A storm rolled in as if from nowhere, black clouds filled the sky, the temperature dropped like a stone and it started to snow. Everyone struggled to get down the mountain road in torrential rain, sleet, and snow. No guard rails, a solid rock face to one side, a 600-foot drop on the other, in what was now virtually night with almost zero visibility. I mean, come on, what's not to like?

It's ironic that the sport of cycling, especially stage races like the Tour de France, is one of the fastest moving of all sports yet requires its fans to sit still in the same place for hours, days, or even a week, often in extreme conditions just to catch a glimpse of the action. 

You might start out with a picnic blanket and a few bottles of wine but if you're serious about being a cycling fan you're going to need more than that. A lot more than that. What starts as a fun day out can, and does, quickly turn into first, a hobby, then a calling, and finally a lifestyle. Tour de France fans are professionals, full time and dedicated, and have the gear to prove it. 

The closer to any of the Tour de France stage high points the number of campervans known affectionally as "Snails" increase significantly as if drawn by some strange power. From the bottom to the top of the Col du Galibier is approximately 17km, come race day there had to have been 5,000 snails on the mountain. Is that a record?

The Vintage Road. Most of the St. Gotthard Pass is paved with granite cobbles, smaller cobbles than Flanders, but cobbles none the less. Ok going up, not so much fun going down. But with the real advantage of clearing the motorcycles that plague these roads. With a new road tunnel bypassing the original road entirely, you have the climb almost to yourself, apart from the other crazy cyclists climbing this piece of history. Time to dust off that 1970's Claud Butler or Mercian, and hit the vintage road.

Stelvio Pass - Black & White

The Stelvio Pass is a mountain pass in northern Italy, at an elevation of 2,757 m (9,045 ft) above sea level. It is the highest paved mountain pass in the Eastern Alps, and the second highest in the Alps, just 13m. below France's Col de l'Iseran (2,770 m).

The original road was built in 1820–25 by the Austrian Empire to connect the former Austrian province of Lombardy with the rest of Austria, covering a climb of 1,871m. The engineer and project manager were Carlo Donegani (1775–1845). Since then the route has changed very little, with it's seventy-five or eighty-eight hairpin turns, depending on how you count them. 48 of them on the northern side are numbered with stones.
