The 21 bends on the route to Alpe d'Huez were originally constructed in 1936 for cars and not bicycles. Throughout the climb, there is scarcely a section where you are not ascending, with only a few meters of relief between bend nine and bend eleven. This is just one of the many factors that make this climb so gruelling, daunting, fantastic and fun, depending on how you view it.
