The Col de Sarenne is the quiet, backstairs way up to Alpe d'Huez.
The Tour de France went down this way a few years ago to enable the peloton to take on the main Alpe d"Huez climb twice in the same day. They weren't very happy about it saying it was too dangerous with a lack of guardrails protecting the riders.
