From the Passo Stelvio to the Col du Galibier, the Col du Tourmalet to the Col d'Aubisque. It's important to understand that cyclists are fanatics. It comes with the territory. Don't expect them to be normal. For a bike rider, cycling 27km. up a mountain for no apparent reason is normal. They do it for the challenge. They do it because they can, for the thrill of it, for the kudos, for the buzz. For the sense of elation that comes with being in the middle of a landscape so impressive it takes your breath away. To know without a shadow of a doubt, this is a good day, a great day, a day to remember, a day that counts.
Show me a mountain - any mountain - and I’ll show you any number of riders willing to race up it - just for fun, just for the hell of it - It’s what we do - It’s who we are.
This is for all the people who can't sit still, who have more energy than they know what to do with. Those who think normal life just isn't for them. Those who think normal life is a killer, to be avoided at all costs. Those who have found something better to do with their time.
Once you have climbed to the top of a mountain, your brain chemistry is altered, somehow. You are not the same person when you return. You are stronger, mentally clearer, whole, and very, very hungry. You're going to need a picture on your wall to celebrate that day - and all the days like it - because life is surprisingly short and those days, they're unique and unrepeatable.
One of the big beasts of the French Alps. The Col de la Colombière starts relatively slowly until you reach the village of Le Reposoir, with its monastery, the Chartreuse du Reposoir. Where the road ramps up like it intends to take revenge for some terrible past life misdemeanour. By the time you reach the top, you will be on your knees.
New Work - 2025Coming off the top of the Col du Pré on a sunny summer's morning with the mountains and the lake stretched out before you is a sight to see. Sweeping down through the bends onto the edge of the lake and out onto the Barrage de Roseland will make your day.
If you feel the need to sing and shout, then just go for it.
New Work - 2025The Mont Blanc massif provides the backdrop to the Col de Joux Plane, and the riders, irrelevant dots in a landscape, start their descent towards Samoëns. This has been quite a day, originally climbing up from Morzine to spend time in this mountain-top paradise with vistas to die for and cafes to restore life. The Col de Joux Plane is a regular climb in the Tour de France, including the 2025 Tour de France Femmes.

The Italian and Swiss Alps are tough guy - tough girl territory. You know who you are. Here is where the men get sorted from the boys, the women from the girls. These climbs are often on a different scale, either in altitude, or length, sometimes remoteness, or all of the above.
