Col d'Izoard - Top
The rock formations of the Casse Déserte and the summit of the Col d'Izoard are in stark contrast to the surrounding lush forest.
The formations are characterized by what is called cargneule, a geological term that refers to an intensely pitted rock made up of brecciated dolomitic material resulting from a dissolution process that form irregular outcrops that stand out from the surrounding debris field. The resulting landscape is often called ruiniform in reference to its ruin-like appearance.
