Passo Giau - Marmolada Glacier

The views from the top of the Passo Giau are some of the best in these mountains.

The Dolomites formed around 200 - 300 million years ago at the bottom of the ocean. Remaining undisturbed for another 100 million years under an increasingly thick layer of marine sediments before being pushed to the surface by the earth’s converging Teutonic plates around 60 to 70 million years ago.

Which goes someway to explains how fossilised shellfish are found under the Marmolada Glacier, 3342 metres above sea level.
