The road, the edge of which is just visible, winds in and out of the folds of the mountainside creating small pockets of extreme heat. Unlike many of the other of the great cycling climbs of the Tour de France, the roads leading up the Ventoux don't really go anywhere other than down the other side, making it a haven for cyclists.
The Tom Simpson memorial less than a kilomete from the top on the south side removes any remaining doubt that this mountain belongs to us.
