Unlike many other of the great cycling climbs, the roads leading up the Ventoux don't really go anywhere other than down the other side, making it a haven for cyclists. The Tom Simpson memorial less than a kilometre from the top on the south side removes any remaining doubt that this mountain belongs to us.
The upper slopes are devoid of trees or vegetation, leaving a moonscape which is simultaneously desolate and breathtakingly beautiful.
