The Sella Ronda

July 11, 2026

For decades, the Dolomites have offered some of the most spectacular road cycling anywhere in the world. The sweeping bends of Passo Gardena, the dramatic cliffs above Passo Sella, the endless hairpins of Passo Pordoi and the rolling roads over Passo Campolongo have become pilgrimage destinations for cyclists from every corner of the globe.

Yet anyone who has visited in recent years will also know the downside. During the height of summer, these iconic mountain roads can become congested with cars, motorhomes and motorcycles, often detracting from what should be one of cycling's greatest experiences.

That is beginning to change.

A New Direction for the Dolomites

Regional authorities are continuing their efforts to reduce traffic across the busiest mountain passes. Rather than encouraging more vehicles, the emphasis is shifting towards protecting one of Europe's most treasured mountain landscapes.

Measures being introduced or considered include:

  • Greater limits on private vehicle access.
  • Reservation systems for some roads and car parks.
  • Increased use of shuttle buses.
  • More traffic-free cycling days.
  • Improved management of visitor numbers during peak periods.

The objective is simple: preserve the unique character of the Dolomites while creating a safer and more enjoyable experience for everyone who visits.

Better Roads for Cyclists

For cyclists, quieter roads can transform the experience.

Instead of riding between lines of slow-moving traffic, the focus returns to what makes these mountains so unforgettable: the rhythm of climbing, the silence of the forests, the sound of cowbells in alpine meadows and the spectacular limestone peaks rising above every hairpin bend.

The Dolomites were never meant to be experienced through a windscreen. They are best discovered at cycling pace.

The Future Looks Bright

The Dolomites remain one of the world's great cycling destinations, and these changes are not about making them harder to visit. They are about ensuring that future generations can experience them as much as they have always deserved to be experienced.

For cyclists, that could mean quieter climbs, cleaner air and safer roads.

For photographers, it means an even greater opportunity to capture the timeless beauty of these legendary mountains.

And for everyone who loves cycling in the high mountains, it is a reminder that some of the best journeys are those where nature takes centre stage.
